Surface Supplied Equipment (SSE) with air With SSE the diver is supplied with air and communication through an umbilical from the surface. This is often used with a Kirby Morgan full face band marine mask or a dive helmet. The advantages of this equipment is that it increases the safety enormously. The equipment is supplied with a double safety. If contact with the surface is lost, the diver switches to his own equipment and is totally self contained. The use of the umbilical makes that the diver has a safety line and it can be used for orientation. The advantages of communication are the same as above, but the communication is better and more reliable. SSE is mostly used for hazardous work and dives with decompression for example thermical cutting.

SSE diving with mixed gas (Nitrox, Trimix or Heliox) The use of the Surface Supplied Equipment is the same as above. There are advantages using mixed gas. Nitrox will extend dive times in shallow waters and Trimix or Heliox willmake it possible to dive deeper than 50 meters. This services requires extra preparation and more equipment and personnel. An example is pipeline welding in a habitat using Nitrox. The dive times were one and a half times longer than diving with air.
