What does it mean ?
Overall Waterproofness of a garment Relates to the waterproofness of the fabric and seams. Fabric waterproofness : is measured by submitting a tensioned fabric to the pressure of water in a column. The limit of waterproofness is reached when 3 droplets of water appear at the fabrics surface (in mm/water column). Seams waterproofness On conventional coated fabrics, seams are glued and coated with a waterproof layer. On laminated membrane fabrics, seams are thermo-taped (heat-bonding between two pieces of fabrics). This sophisticated technical process is also used in the manufacture of Plastimo liferafts. Breathability Is the fabric's capacity to let air/moisture through (litre/m2/second). The skin's natural function is to breathe and to perspire in order to maintain the body even temperature. A breathable fabric works the same way. · Breathable membrane or coating ? Coating makes the garment water and windproof, while wicking the body moisture away. A membrane fulfills the same function, but with a much higher breathability ratio. · Hydrophilic or microporous ? The pores of microporous membranes used to distort slightly over time, which deteriorated the performance level of technical seawear. Hydrophilic polyurethane coating now provides an enhanced resistance to chafing and abrasion.
