| | | AUTOMATIC IDENTIFICATION SYSTEM... AIS is a way of identifying another vessel's position, course and speed (along with other details like name and freight). This information is displayed on your chartplotter. The M121, M84 Explorer 657, 567 and 557 support AIS; offering you the ability to bring this important navigation and safety aid to your vessel. | | |
| | | |
| | | HOW DOES IT WORK? All AIS information is transmitted by vessels equipped with AIS transponders, a unit able to transmit as well as receive AIS data. Transmitting vessels tend to be commercial ships legally required to transmit AIS data. Your AIS receiver listens to those transmissions. The receiver sends appropriate data to your AIS-compatible display and it's then presented on your chart. Once received, this information is plotted onto your chart. This provides invaluable information that works alongside radar to clarify targets and provide extra protection against potential collisions. | | |
| | | AIS-READY PRODUCTS M Series M121, M84 (M Series requires cable AA002464) Northstar Explorer 657, 567, 557 (Explorer requires cable AA002458) AIS TRACKING This service is a growing necessity for navigation. AIS receivers reveal AIS-transmitting ships on your display, bringing additional safety information to your helm. Note: Contact your Northstar dealer for compatible AIS receivers | | |

| | | WHY DO I NEED TO RECEIVE AIS INFORMATION? Due to VHF's longer wavelength, AIS has particular use in identifying targets that may be obscured by poor visibility, or behind larger targets like low islands and large ships that radar can't penetrate. | | |
| | | |
| | | |
| | | Take advantage of Northstar's new color coded AIS targets and comprehensive data screens. Northstar's new plotting implementation is exceptionally thorough. Also note that AIS text messages can be read, a full target list is available, and alarms can be set on both CPA and proximity. Plus you can choose to have each target project its course based on time (two minutes to two hours). | | |
| | | |
| | | Placing the cursor over the AIS target and pressing ENTER displays complete AIS vessel information as shown above. | | |
