When used with a wheel, just imagine that the instrument needle is connected with an invisible wire to the centre of your wheel. When using a tiller, imagine that the end of the tiller is "fixed" at the tip of the needle and that you could pull the needle back to its straight up position just by "dragging" it there, it just works!
