Sail Handling:
1. The boom vnug (kicker) slum Id be off completely and Ihe mainshecl eased be lore furling or unfurling ilic mainsail
2. The mainsail s:l■.u111! aiways he ftirleu >.■■. iih the boat head to v. iml or slighlb Tom port. This is true for lulling and unfurling die mainsail.
3. Furling or unfurling the sail with the v. ind on die starboard quarter will increase the friction of the sail on die mast, causing mmeeessary wear.
4. Always take additional eate when furling or unfurling at die bottom most batten, as the lulled sail diameter is al its largesl poinl and the inlerual friction is greatest at this point.
Reefing:
Reefing the mainsail, headsail or both in combination allows I he skipper to keep the trim of the boat in a more upright mode. This is a safer, more eomfortable and faster way to sail in strong breezes. In addition, reeling ihe sails iiuportunil} affecis the balance of ihc boat and can increase or decrease ihe amoimi of weal her helm ihai develops al ihe « licel. The liming and sequence of reefing is up to the skipper of the boat to consider and will vary from skipper to skipper, as some conditions or preference in how ihe boat is sailed in reeling conditions are variable. With this in mind, the follow urn poinis arc general observations.
The 'balance" ofbelm is rcgulalcd through masi rake, fore and aft. "['his will be preset during the initial commissioning.
a. More mast rake aft will move the sailplan center of ellorl aft. in effect pulling more loads on the sails aft of the keel. Ibis will then in turn 'pivot' the boat around the keel, bringing ihe bow inio ihe wind.
b. Mast rake forward and the opposite is true, the balance moves forward and the boat will gain neutral or lee helm.
Weather helm is desirable in all sailing yachts, ft keeps the bow into the wind while
■.ailing u 11 'a aid and i ill pro1, es \our V VI (i to weather.
a. In 10 to 12 knots of wind \\ ilb the sails fully deployed we expect to have the helm just slightly above neutral or w ith a small amount of helm. This means in releasing the wheel, the boat w ill (depending on wind, sea conditions and boat trim) slowly come into the wind.
As you reef the sails, von are also aoiim to affeei the balance or center of effort on the
sailplan.
a. Reefing ihe genua \\ ill reduce the area of this sail and in turn moves the center o effort aft, increasing helm.
b. Reefing ihe mainsail first, will move the center of effort forward and decrease th weather helm.
