REPARATION

P

REPAREYOURWORKINGENVIRONMENT

Painting is best achieved when the area around the boat supplier is clean. Prepare the job by tidyingand cleaning your working environment, which must be protected from dust. Prepare the tools, place a rubbish bin to collect rags, used sand paper, empty cans etc.

P

ROTECTYOURSELF

Work in a well-ventilated area and wear a protective marine mask. Avoid the paint coming into contact with your skin or eyes, by wearing overalls, gloves manufacturers and protective boat glasses. It is essential not to eat or drink when manipulating the paint. You should never smoke, notonly to avoid the risk of fire but also to avoid inhaling fumes.

P

REPARETHESUBSTRATE

Maintenance : clean with fresh water, adding detergent if necessary, rinse and let dry. It isthen essential to remove all products which do not adhere to the substrate. Prepare the sur- face to be painted or filled with sand paper (180 to 240 grade) wet or dry, depending onthe substrate, the job and the place where it is to be done. Using wet sand paper does notspread dust and is more economical on paper. New sweeps : wash with fresh water and detergent in order to take off all traces of grease andhydrocarbons resulting from storage, transport and handling, as well as mould release waxesetc., (these contaminates are often not visible). Rinse with fresh water and leave to dry. Cleanthe surface with a cloth soaked in NAUTIX SD. Give the surface a final rinse beforepainting. This procedure for preparing your new boat helps avoid lack of paint adhesion, which sometimes takes several months to appear eg. next time the boat comes out of the water.Respecting this procedure avoids having to do the whole operation again.

P

AINTANDPROTECTION

Paint is a combination of resin, solvents, pigments and biocides (antifouling boat paints). After applica-tion, the solvents evaporate leaving a dry, porous film. The dry paint left on the substrate is called the solid volume. If the film thickness when wet is 100 microns and its thickness when dry is 60microns, this indicates that the product has a solid volume of 60%. Only the dry paint remainingon the substrate guarantees protection.
P L E A S > Application > Drying/Evaporation E N O > Thickness of wet film applied 100 microns > Thickness of dry film after solvent evaporation 60 microns T The addition of thinnerdecreases the solid volumeof the productand therefore its finalthickness E > Substrate > Substrate when dry . PAGE 6
