Text version of the page
NAVTEX is a world-wide system of navigation, Safety and Weather warnings broadcast by individual nations under the general authority of the IMO (International Maritime Organisation). Broadcasts are required to have a minimum coverage of 400 nautical miles from the broadcast station, normally better than this can be expected. Because of the better propagation of radio waves by night much longer distances of 1000 miles or more are not uncommon. No licence is required and the information is free to purchasers of suitable equipment. The information is broadcast in English, on 518 khz, some stations transmit in local language on 490 khz.
COVERAGE
It is not intended that coverage should be global, only that it should operate within range of major
ports. For the most part this provides virtually total coverage for coasting yachtsmen, although
there are still gaps where planned stations do not yet operate, or where major ports are a long way apart. The NASA TARGET NAVTEX covers all international Navtex stations. The individual stations are identified by a letter of the alphabet. It is these letters which determine which station you choose to receive. We list Navareas I, II and III below for your interest.
NAVTEX TRANSMITTING STATIONS 518KHZ(english language)
The Target Navtex was launched in January 1995 and has established itself as our most successful Navtex receiver to date. Following the NASA design philosophy the unit is simple to operate and with the cruising yachtsmen in mind has unbelievably low power consumption. Unlike other Navtex receivers it dispenses with troublesome paper printouts and utilises a high contrast LCD to display a full worldwide Navtex service for all international Navtex stations. It even comes with an internal battery to back up the data if the power supply is disrupted. The unit is
designed to operate continuously and is programmable for station and message type. It can store over eight thousand characters in memory and will receive and retain messages even when you are asleep, busy handling your vessel or even in the bar 'planning' your next trip. This excellent system complete with its own short stub boat antenna. To receive the Navtex low frequency signals masthead mounting is unnecessary, pushpit or deck mounting is all that is needed.

MESSAGE TYPES & TRANSMISSION TIMES
All messages are text, there are no weather maps or graphics. Transmissions are broadcast on
518 kHz by timed sequence so that no station will overlap another. This means there will be
some delay from switching on the unit to receiving information useful to you, and most units are left on permanently whilst the boat is in commission. You can programme out message types of
no interest to you. Each message type is identified by a letter of the alphabet as follows:
A. Navigational Warnings B. Gale Warnings C. Ice Reports D. Search and Rescue Information
including Piracy and Armed Robbery Warnings (cannot be rejected by the receiver) E. Shipping
Forecasts F. Pilot Messages G. Decca Messages H. Loran-C Messages I. Omega Message J. Satnav Messages K. Other Navaid Messages L. Additional Navigation Warnings V. Amplifying Navigational Warning information initially announced under 'A'.
