Survival In Cold Water? It Takes Figuring Out
In just 20 minutes, hypothermia can deprive you of all mental and physical capacities, leading to unconsciousness and even death. At Mustang Survival, our research scientists are dedicated to protecting people from hypothermia. The length of time a person can survive in cold water primarily depends on both the water’s temperature and the thermal insulation of the victim’s protective clothing. The scientific measure of such insulation is referred to as a Clo value. Simply put, the higher the Clo, the greater the insulation and the longer you can survive in cold water. To provide the maximum Clo possible, Mustang products are made with our unique AirSoft™ foam - it not only provides maximum insulation against the cold, it also keeps you afloat to protect you from drowning. This graph indicates random samples of Clo values and the corresponding estimation of survival time in calm water (assuming a thin person with a 5.5°F [3°C] drop in core temperature). Body heat stays in
Skin Mustang Survival garments are lined with our innovative AirSoft ™ polyvinylchloride (PVC) closed-cell foam. By trapping air pockets, this foam provides our products with both buoyancy and insulation. In fact, all Mustang garments exceed the minimum buoyancy requirements for Transport Canada / Coast Guard approval. This allows for a loss of buoyancy over time due to compression of the foam. 2 3 4
