“Upwind the racing isincredibly close and is
comparable with
keelboat sailing; as soon
as you turn downwind
you turn on the fun and
excitement of marine dinghy
sailing” “It is such a relief tosail a keelboat where
one can be entirely
independent of marinas,
lifts and four-wheel-drive
vehicles! The whole
launching process is a straightforward two-man job”
Winning won’tdepend on the
fitness of the crew!
Technical Details:
Design Tony Castro, with his provensuccess in sportsboat design as well as
achievements in other keelboat classes
worldwide, was chosen by Laser for the
SB Sails >
3 Hull . It was clear from the outset that heshared Laser’s vision and passion for the
project and the result is a boat that Laser
and Tony Castro can be truly proud of. Foam sandwich FRP construction, built to the legendary Olympic Laser build
quality. Robust, virtually maintenance free
and backed by a comprehensive three-year
hull warranty.
Mainsail and jib are manufacturedby Hyde from X-Ply Mylar. Both sails are a
full radial cut, with stitched seams,
providing durability and strength. The
mainsail has one full length and three
short battens. Large windows in the jiband mainsail offer a wide field of view. >
Thanks to the low aspect keel and avery high ballast ratio the Laser SB
3 ROB ANDREWS is an extremely stable and stiff
sportsboat. With the implementationof a ‘no hiking rule’, race results relyon skills and tactics and not on the
fitness of the crew. In fact the sit inbars effectively prevent hiking andpromote on-board communication
between crew members. Laser SB Close competition is guaranteed byone-design class rules for hull, rig and
sails, banning expensive extras.Together with the no-hiking rule, amonitoring system at events to uphold
the crew weight limit of 270kgensures a truly level playing field.
MARK RUSHALL Yachts & Yachting boat test On its custom built marine trailer, the Laser SB
3 can be towed comfortablybehind a normal family car and is
easy to manhandle around the boatpark. The mast is raised without theneed for special equipment and it is
not necessary to enlist the help of
the local rugby team for launching.
3 delivers racing in comfortwithout the athletics.
“Laser has a reputationfor being the best at
creating awesome one-
design race circuits,
taking in quality venues
and including the now
legendary après sail” “SB
3
racing has proved to be everything I hoped forand more. One design is the only way to go for really
good racing now, and the SB
3
gives close tacticalupwind sailing with lively performance offwind, and
the boat is hassle free for moving around. The fleet is
friendly but competitive, and we have been to some
great venues. With a fast growing fleet, it’s only
going to get better!”
