Discovery Yachts New Forest Exclusive - 1

Discovery Yachts Welcome to the dream factory - if you dream of adventure and freedom, sailing across oceans and visiting those corners of the world others cannot reach. This is the modern shipyard at Discovery Yachts, tucked away on the banks of Southampton Water. This is where Britain's traditional boat-building heritage meets the very latest technology, and where purist sailing meets bespoke luxury, creating what are considered to be the world's finest blue-water cruising yachts. Discovery Yachts was established in 1998 by John and Caroline Charnley who, unable to find the perfect yacht with which they could realise a long-held dream to go long-distance cruising, set about building their own. In the process, they commissioned renowned superyacht designer Ron Holland and the Discovery 55 was born - a yacht built and designed by sailors, for sailors. The Discovery 55 combines strength and stability, reliability and performance, and is specifically designed for two crew to handle with ease and in complete safety, with the assistance of labour-saving devices and electric winches, although everything can be done manually, too. Alastair Walton, Sales and Marketing Director, says: "These yachts don't hang around in the south of England for long. Out of the 60 yachts that we've built so far, only a few are currently in UK waters and nearly all have crossed at least one major ocean. They are not for cruising around the Isle of Wight! They are built for adventure, for exploring oceans, for visiting remote pacific atolls that you cannot reach any other way, and for having fun with those you love!" It is an adventure enjoyed in some comfort; these yachts truly are homes from home. "It is amazing how some very expensive boats only have a standard double bed," continues Alastair "Here at Discovery Yachts, we provide our owners with a superking double pocket sprung mattress for the master cabin. Why would you want a smaller bed than you have at home?" ►

One feature unique to Discovery is the raised floor and navigation station in the middle of the yacht, ensuring the saloon is light and airy with panoramic views of the horizon. Just three wide curved steps lead from the saloon up to the cockpit - designed to be negotiated with ease even when the conditions are challenging. The galley includes a self-levelling cooker and hob, and a huge fridge/freezer. You are also able to make your own fresh water – enabling a self-sufficiency that is essential when crossing the Pacific where there are no marinas, few islands and scarce provisions. Back on...

THESE BOATS ARE DESIGNED TO GO LONG DISTANCES; THEY'RE BUILT FOR ADVENTURE. tell us that they've been looking at Discovery Yachts for the last five years and they have a plan..." The plan is usually that they are waiting for the children to leave home, or they are in the process of selling their business, or that they are about to retire. In every case, the plan comes to life by building a yacht and sailing away. Although some have had a boat before and a clear idea of what they want, not all are experienced sailors. However, the relative novice needn't worry. Not only does the Owner Care...
