| | | Initially, we considered turning our 44 foot sailing catamaran into a power version by adding the usual appendages, but soon we decided that this was not the correct way to go, and discarded this idea in favor of designing from the bottom up, along the lines of a Trawler cat. Parametric studies of currently available Trawler cats were done but quiet frankly we found little appeal in the styling of those craft. That enabled us to define that our objective was to design a craft which would be an up-market Trawler cat, but with ultra-modern styling, ignoring the traditional format associated with Trawler cats. The result is the JAG 530, a Powercat that is different from everything else on the market, yet is both practical and comfortable, very spacious and extremely luxurious in furnishings and equipment. Essential criteria of the design were that the craft would be: • A displacement vessel with transoceanic capability, and able to handle any rough seas encountered. A planing hull form was not considered for these reasons. • The hull would incorporate a profile to generate hydro-dynamic lifting of the stern to compensate for normal bow lift at speed, and so avoid dragging half the ocean behind at speeds over 12 knots. • That the vessel would be a little ship that is sturdy, seaworthy and economical to operate. The design of the JAG 530 was done exclusively by hand and took 6 months to complete, burning a lot of midnight oil. Designed "in house" by Peter Dean Sr. with consultants Prof J.V.R. Van Niekerk and J.B.M. Ridley (UK). Construction of the hull and deck plugs and manufacturing of the molds (to an exceptionally high standard of finish) took 18 months, a lot longer than originally anticipated. Although built primarily for ocean cruising owners, a day charter version licensed to carry 55 passengers, has also been built. This craft has operated very successfully for the past 18 months out of Hout Bay, near Cape Town, South Africa Standard engines are the Vetus- Deutz DTA 67 diesels producing 286HP at 2600 RPM providing a maximum speed of 19 knots. Optional engines are the 2xYanmar 6LY3A-ETP diesels producing 480HP at 3300 RPM, providing a maximum speed of approximately 25 knots Experience of this craft in operation shows that the asymmetric semi wave-piercing hull design cuts through the water like a boat knife, and the super high bridge deck clearance ensures that slamming is non-existent at prudent speeds for the weather conditions. The standard Jag 530 is an extremely lavishly equipped vessel. | | |
