| The fire that broke out on one luxury cruise liner in March 2006 has caused heavy activity among the regulatory bodies, cruise owners and fire protection companies in order to prevent a similar incident to happen. A fire broke out on a balcony and rapidly spread on the outside of the liner and affected more than 100 cabins. One passenger died and several suffered smoke poisoning. Even though the accommodation, engine spaces etc. have been the issue for comprehensive fire regulations since the Scandinavian Star incident, the balconies have been "regulation free". However, as the cruise liner industry has developed, the cabin and balconies have been larger and better equipped, often with heavy combustible materials, material which can feed and cause a devastating ire to spread with surprising speed, as we have seen, if there is nothing to prevent this. Danfoss Semco has worked close with certification authorities to give input to the coming session at IMO FP 51 as well as designing, producing and installing a protective system in close cooperation with the owners of cruise vessels, in order to install an efficient protective system as smooth as possible with a minimum of disturbance to the operation of the vessel. The system is composed of both a detection system and a zoned de-luge water spray system. Princess cruises took immediate action and decided to install the Danfoss Semco Balcony protection system on a number of their cruise vessels. |
