B E S I . D E THE AS-INTERFACE® is one of the most innovative networking solutions in modern automation technology. The AS-Interface® was developed in 1990 as a less expensive alternative for the cable tree and has proved to be extremely reliable after years of use in numerous industrial sectors. The original idea was to network simple binary sensors and actuators with a simple cable that is capable of transmitting data and energy at the same time. The AS-Interface® quickly improved on this: intelligent sensors and actuators can be linked and configured via the AS-Interface®. Scope for transmission in the network or as auxiliary energy has been extended. Profiles support simple exchange between products of different manufacturers. THE MOST IMPORTANT IMPROVEMENTS: UP TO 62 SLAVES CAN BE CONNECTED TO ONE MASTER The AS-Interface® Version 2.1 can address up to 62 slaves in one network. To achieve this, the slave address 1...31 can be configured for two slaves each, slave “A” and slave “B”. Thanks to full backward compatibility, one can of course continue to use existing slaves. SIMPLE CONNECTION OF ANALOG SLAVES The AS-Interface® Version 2.1 has been optimized for binary and analog devices at the lowest automation level. The transmission of analog signals is as simple as binary value transmission. All data is recognized and exchanged automatically. No configuration software is required! Another advantage is that in the past, the analog protocol had to be processed via a function block in the user software, and the PLC cycle slowed the transmission process down considerably. In the version 2.1, analog signal processing is done in the master (hardware). The analog values are now available in the PLC without any delay. MORE DETAILED DIAGNOSTICS In addition to communication errors, the AS-Interface® Version 2.1 can also recognize periphery errors such as short circuits, overload and absence of auxiliary voltage. It can also locate these errors exactly! The maximum cycle time of 5 ms remains the same for existing slaves and those in version 2.1 which are only present once. Slaves that are present as A and B slaves in the network are addressed every other cycle. Their maximum refresh time is therefore 10 ms. DATA AND POWER AS-Interface® utilizes an unshielded two-connector flat cable for transmitting data and power. Up to 8 amps can be transmitted via the bus cable. Several hundred mA per slave can be extracted from the network. The maximum cable length is 100 meters. It can be extended with a repeater. TREE STRUCTURE Any network topology is possible, particularly the most flexible one – the tree structure. Every slave can be connected at the optimal point. Connections can be located anywhere. SAFE AND INTEROPERABLE Every single message is checked for potential transmission errors during data transmission with the AS-Interface®. Errors are automatically eliminated by repetition. Another highlight is the system’s interoperable capability: products from different manufacturers can be operated on a single network. STANDARDIZATION / STANDARDS The AS-Interface® already complies with European standard EN 50295. IEC standard 62026-2 is about to be published. UPWARD COMPATIBILITY The AS-Interface® is an open system and complements advanced field buses such as PROFIBUS, Interbus-S, DeviceNet, FIP, CAN etc. It can act quite simply as a basis for such networks. NOISE IMMUNITY The transmission of data and power via the same cable is safe; its reliability has been proven in theory and years of practical operation. RATIO OF COST AND EFFECTIVENESS The AS-Interface® has many advantages compared with conventional solutions: • no I/O cards necessary • simple and cheap set-up of the network and the distribution through modules • (replacing the “trunk” and the “branches” of the cable tree) • no cables, switchgear cabinet volume, cable channels, distribution channels and connections • comparatively minor planning work needed • simple documentation • simple addition of periphery compared with more complex systems • easy installation check • rapid start-up • scope for updating and modifying product and manufacturing changes easily and flexibly. SIMPLE – QUICK – COST SAVING Using the AS-Interface® means a potential saving of up to 40 percent!
